It is very important to use the ultrasound scan in pregnancy so as to reassure the well-being of the fetus according to the expected developments. The most important scans are:
• The Nuchal Translucency scan: is carried out at 11-13 weeks of gestation and assesses the amount of fluid behind the neck of the fetus. In combination with measurement of PAPP-A into maternal blood it is more accurate in detection of chromosomal abnormalities. • The Anomaly Scan: is carried out at 20-22 weeks of gestation and gives a more detailed anatomy of the fetus. • The Doppler: is carried out at 32 and 36 weeks of gestation and provides velocity measurements of blood flow between mother and fetus. The identification of preeclampsia by using Doppler is also of great importance.
