Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes

Pregnant women may develop diabetes during pregnancy which normally disappears after delivery. It is of great importance to identify diabetes early in pregnancy as it may cause other problems if not controlled.
Gestational diabetes could lead to early miscarriages (during 1st trimester) and teratogenesis, such as cardiovascular dysfunctions.
The most common result is the increased birth weight which may complicate birth itself.

It is close related to pre-eclampsia, preterm delivery, hydramnios and increased rate of caesarean section, as well as maternal infections mainly urinary. Therefore it is very important to have a good co-operation between obstetricians and endocrinologists.

Mini GTT (glucose tolerance test)

Usually it is obtained between 26-28 weeks of gestation and it may detect developing gestational diabetes which hasn’t shown any other signs but still may affect pregnancy.
